There are some really good ideas bubbling up in this discussion - I'm
glad we're having it now.

Full disclosure - I've been a member of ARLIS/NA (and several of its
chapters) for about 9-10 years and now serve as the Southeast Regional
Representative. We definitely need a venue for chapter leaders to
convene, discuss, and make decisions. It's a long time coming. We
would probably also benefit from a similar structure for other Society
leaders (Committees, DSRTs).

While I agree that ARLIS/NA needs to improve Board-chapter
communication, my sense is that it would actually weaken communication
between the Board and chapters if the Regional Rep positions were
removed. Why? The Reps are in a position to see the bigger picture and
help build consensus. Building consensus is a big part of our job - and
it's not always easy. We meet with chapters in person, and we have
continuous dialogue with all chapters in our region and with the Board -
especially when tough issues come up.

ARLIS/NA is grappling with some complex issues this year (affiliation
and membership dues restructuring). In order to make good decisions,
the Society needs a method of consistent and reliable communication.
The Executive Board, which includes the Regional Reps, currently meets
every week - either "virtually" via email or conference call. We do
not have Board meetings if several Board members cannot attend.

This is the level of commitment and time that the Society requires of
leadership in order to move things forward.
