Position: Technical Services / Systems Librarian

Bard Graduate Center Library

 

The Bard Graduate Center offers MA and PhD programs in the history of the
decorative and applied arts; cultural and design history; museum history and
practice; and garden history and landscape design.  

 

The library collection comprises approximately 40,000 volumes of monographs,
rare books, auction catalogs and bound periodicals.  The library subscribes
to nearly 300 serials.  The staff is made up of 4 professionals, 2 library
assistants, and student employees.  This position reports to the Chief
Librarian.

 


RESPONSIBILITES


 

*         Original and copy cataloging of monographic and serial materials
in all formats and a variety of languages.

*         Manages all aspects of technical services workflow and quality
control, supervising p/t catalogers and library assistants.

*         Works with Chief Librarian to establish departmental policies and
procedures, as well as long-range planning.

*         Coordinates the implementation and maintenance of new library
software and upgrades.

*         Troubleshoots general hardware and software problems.

*         Responsible for local system administration of Innovative
Interfaces Millennium and RLIN21, including changing local settings and
running reports.

*         Liaise with IT department, Bard College and outside vendors
regarding local systems problems.

*         Administer and maintain the Library's web presence.

*         Manages the library's participation in the SCIPIO auction catalog
database.

*         Participate in reference services, bibliographic instruction, and
staff training.

*         Other duties as assigned.

 


QUALIFICATIONS


 

*         ALA-accredited MLS with at least 3 years of cataloging experience

*         Thorough knowledge of cataloging principles and procedures
including AACR2, USMARC formats, LCSH, authority control, and LC
classification.

*         In-depth experience with an integrated library system (Innovative
Interfaces Millennium and RLIN21 preferred.

*         Excellent computer skills including HTML, Dreamweaver, and
database software.  Experience with networking preferred.

*         Some reference experience required, as well as the willingness to
participate in bibliographic instruction.

*         Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships
with a diverse community of colleagues and library users.  Ability to work
independently and as part of a team.

*         Working knowledge of 1 or more foreign languages (preferably
Italian, French or German). 

*         Background in art history, decorative arts, or garden history
preferred.
