>What about Visual Culture Documentation Asso of NA? I've been following this thread with great interest. A huge difference between ARLIS and any other organization is that many art libraries have become repositories of art in book form, and art librarians have become curators. In addition to the documentation of art, ARLIS members have become responsible for choosing and maintaining collections that ARE art. In a very real sense, libraries are the museums of the future. It is clear that there are certain financial advantages to a merger that would reduce the overhead of both organizations. But to choose a name that eliminates the word ART would reflect a certain trend in librarianship that eliminated the word BOOK and even the word LIBRARY, and changed the field to one of INFORMATION management rather than the care, presentation, organization, and service of real objects. -- Richard http://minsky.com http://centerforbookarts.org __________________________________________________________________ Mail submissions to [log in to unmask] For information about joining ARLIS/NA see: http://www.arlisna.org/join.html Send administrative matters (file requests, subscription requests, etc) to [log in to unmask] ARLIS-L Archives and subscription maintenance: http://lsv.uky.edu/archives/arlis-l.html Questions may be addressed to list owner (Judy Dyki) at: [log in to unmask]
