Hi Barbara,
Thanks for sending this out to us.
I’m sorry to hear that this is the
final decision.
It’s probably too late to change the
new policy, but, in my opinion, we will most likely have fewer chapter members
as a result of this change. I hope I’m wrong, but as a long time
member of both national ARLIS and the local chapter, it seems to me that over
the years there have been chapter members who just aren’t interested in
joining the national. It could be that it’s too expensive, if your
job is only part-time, or if your job is only partially devoted to visual
arts. It could be that the national ARLIS just doesn’t serve your
needs the way that a local chapter does. There are plenty of institutions
that don’t pay for professional memberships.
I, for one, will miss seeing those folks
at local chapter meetings.
(I’ve been an ARLIS member since
about 1977 or 1978—on and off—but mostly on.)
Thanks for keeping us aware of what’s
going on.

Please excuse
cross-posting.
Dear ARLIS/NA,
In an effort to reach
all of the members of ARLIS/NC, I am forwarding my earlier email to the
society’s list-serv.
I also believe that
because this agreement impacts not only chapter members -- but all of
the society’s members -- the discussion needs to be opened up to the
larger ARLIS/NA membership.
Please respond to the
list.

Dear
ARLIS/Northern Californians --
PLEASE
click below and read the email and documentation sent out by ARLIS/NA
leadership concerning Chapter affiliation (reproduced in web form with
permission from Margaret Webster; web locale created by our colleagues in the
Southeast chapter):
http://www.uflib.ufl.edu/afa/arlis-se/affiliation-email.htm
As
current Northern California Chapter Chair, I am being asked to sign the legally
binding Affiliation agreement by July 30, 2006. Signing this
agreement will have a great impact on the future of ARLIS/NA, our chapter, and
the membership of both.
I
do not feel, as the representative of the chapter, that I can sign any legally binding
contract without discussion and a vote amongst the NC chapter members.
Please
read Margaret Webster’s email and “supporting info” documents
carefully and comment to the list.
Thank
you,
Barbara
