Wow.
We have an unbelievable assortment of books and DVDs for June.
Surely, every Library Service list is fantastic,
but Junes list really takes the cake. Without further ado
.
We first bring you
two titles from Rhizomes Celebrating New Media Scholarship series.
Rhizome.org is an online platform for the global new media arts community,
and since 2003, an affiliate organization of the New Museum of Contemporary
Art. This summer and fall, the organization will host a series of events
which acknowledge important contributions to the field of new media
art. Rhizome recently celebrated the release of New Media Art,
a new book from critic Reena Jana and Rhizome.org founder Mark Tribe.
New Media Art situates the practice as a specific art
historical movement, and presents a colorful, basic primer on the subject.
On June 15th, Rhizome will continue with a launch for Ed Halters
From Sun Tzu to Xbox: War and Video Games at the New
Museum Store. Halters book explores the history of the relationship
between games and military culture, and illuminates the troubling connection
between the simulation of war and its reality.
More New Media, you
say? Perhaps we can suggest Else/Where: Mapping- New Cartography
of Networks or DATA Browser 03 Curating Immateriality:
the Work of the Curator in the Age of Network Systems, both
on this months list. Else/Where: Mapping showcases
a number of cutting edge projects in graphic and industrial design,
art, architecture, and technology which examine how cartographic techniques
are adapted to map the emerging landscapes of electronic communication.
Curating Immateriality: the Work of the Curator in the Age of
Network Systems is a collection of essays which survey the transformation
of the practice of curation by distributed networks.
And lastly, before
you delve into Junes assortment, we leave you with two important
books which address the current state of arts institutions. One is the
aptly titled Art and Its Institutions, another fine project
undertaken by the Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art, which details
the present conditions influencing arts institutions and its effect
on artistic practice. The other is Notes for an Art School,
a publication released by the organizers of Manifesta 6, before a disagreement
between the curators and the city of Nicosia effectively discontinued
the project. Manifesta 6 was to be a biennial in the form of an experimental
art school, and Notes for an Art School documents some
of the fresh ideas and queries offered up by this project.
