This year the jury recognized the Canadian Centre for Architecture and Douglas & McIntyre for the exhibition catalogue The 60s: Montreal Thinks Big / Les années 60 : Montréal voit grand.  The jury commented as follows.

“This is a publication that has greater potential beyond the exhibition itself.  As a reference tool on the city of Montreal, the book provides useful information for architectural, sociological and political studies, and more.  The book also captures an era that has had a huge impact on the arts in Canada.  The 1967 Montreal Expo gave Canada a great opportunity to dream big and receive international exposure for the city that once was the largest Canadian metropolis.  The momentum of the decade found expression in the physical transformation in Montreal.  This is certainly the essence of the book which recounts the many urban developments that were taking place during the period.  There is much written about visual art, including painters, sculptors, and art movements in Quebec for this time period of art history but nothing specifically celebrating the city’s architecture.  This book certainly fills a gap as far as the topic is concerned. The book is beautifully designed, well organized, with good visuals, timelines and maps.  It is written by experts in the field, scholarly and well researched.  The extensive bibliography and listing of architects and engineers active in Montreal at the time will facilitate further studies on the topic.  In summary, The 60s: Montreal Thinks Big is an invaluable tool capturing a wider audience than those with a specific interest in Montreal’s architectural history.”

The Melva J. Dwyer Award is administered by the ARLIS/Canada Chapter, in honour of Melva J. Dwyer, former head librarian of the University of British Columbia Fine Arts Library. The award recognizes her dedication and lifetime contribution to art librarianship, and is given each year to the creator of an outstanding reference or research tool relating to Canadian art or architecture.

The award was officially presented on May 7th, 2006 at the convocation ceremony during the ARLIS/NA (Art Libraries Society of North America) annual conference in Banff, Alberta.

Cette année le jury a rendu honneur au Centre canadien d’architecture et à Douglas & McIntyre pour le catalogue d’exposition Les années 60 : Montréal voit grand / The 60s: Montreal Thinks Big.  Le jury s’est exprimé ainsi.

« Cette publication est d’une envergure qui va au-delà de l’exposition elle-même.  En tant qu’outil de référence au sujet de la ville de Montréal, le livre contient de l’information utile pour les études en architecture, sociologie, politique, et autres.  Il représente aussi un moment qui a eu un impact majeur sur les arts au Canada.  L’Expo de Montréal de 1967 a donné au Canada une opportunité de rêver à grande échelle, et d’être reconnue à travers la planète comme la plus grande métropole canadienne de l'époque du pays.  Le momentum de la décennie s’exprimait par la transformation physique de la ville de Montréal.  Ici se trouve le coeur du livre qui tient compte des nombreux développements urbains qui se déroulaient à l’époque.  On a largement écrit au sujet de l’art visuel, y compris les peintres, les sculpteurs et les mouvements artistiques au Québec durant cette période de l’histoire de l’art, mais rien qui met en védette l’architecture de la ville comme telle.  Le livre comble alors une lacune importante dans la litterature.  Le design, les illustrations, les chronologies et les cartes sont excellents, et le tout est bien organisé.  Les textes proviennent des experts dans le domaine et profitent de la recherche savante.  La bibliographie étendue et les listes d’architectes et d’ingénieurs qui travaillaient à Montréal à l’époque faciliteront les recherches plus approfondies du sujet.  En somme, Les années 60 : Montréal voit grand est un outil digne d’attirer un public au-delà de ceux qui s’intéressent uniquement à l’histoire architecturale de Montréal. »

Le prix Melva J. Dwyer est décerné par ARLIS/Canada, la section canadienne d'ARLIS/NA, en l'honneur de Melva J. Dwyer qui était autrefois bibliothécaire en chef de la Bibliothèque des beaux-arts de l'Université de la Colombie-Britannique et en
 reconnaissance de son dévouement et de sa contribution au domaine des bibliothèques d'art. Ce prix annuel récompense les créateurs d'instruments exceptionnels de consultation et de recherche dans le domaine de l'architecture et des arts canadiens.

Le prix fut présenté le 7 mai 2006 à la cérémonie de remise des prix lors du Congrès annuel d'ARLIS/NA (Art Libraries Society of North America) à Banff, Alberta.
