The French emblem of Marianne is meant to be inspirational. Whether called Marianne or Liberty, as in Eugene Delacroix's famous painting "Liberty Leading the People," her original evocation was martial, although today she is a kinder and gentler representation of Liberté-Egalité-Fraternité. Many people are moved by Pablo Picasso's "Guernica," and Francisco Goya's "The Third of May 1808." --K.A.
