The Art Libraries Society /North America (ARLIS/NA) and the Visual Resources Association (VRA) are pleased to announce the 2006 Summer Educational Institute for Visual Resources and Image Management, to be held at Reed College, in Portland, Oregon from June 11th - 16th, 2006. This year, topics will be clustered into a series of "Days": Data Structure Day: Intro to Metadata; Core 4.0; Database Design; Work/Image; XML Content Metadata Day:Authorities; CCO; OAI,FRBR,CDWA,EAD, Imaging Day DAMS Day Intellectual Property Rights, Strategy, and Implementation Day Instructors, covering a wide range of expertise, are being drawn from recognized professionals in the field, this year showcasing our West Coast Colleagues. Attendees, ranging from Visual Recourses specialists to Academics to Digital Librarians and Archivists to Library School students, will receive certification of attendance and completion from our parent organizations. As most library and information science programs do not address the needs of image collection professionals, the ARLIS/NA -VRA Summer Educational Institute is intended to provide a standardized and sustainable program for visual resources training, with a focus on issues related to digital collection management and item-level image metadata. As was true for the first two SEIs, the 2006 class is fully enrolled at 45 participants, with a waitlist. The 2007 SEI will be at Indiana University, Bloomington, and proposals are being considered for the 2008 institute. SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES We are actively seeking donors and sponsors for the 2006 Summer Educational Institute, and for future institutes. Many opportunities for named sponsorships at various levels are available, including: Reception ($750-$1000) Breaks ($125-250) This year we are particularly in need of help in providing three introductory texts for each of our participants, as we will be depending on these to cover much basic material which no longer fits into the very full SEI schedule. Even though we can get them at cost, we still need over $60.00 per participant to provide them with the VRA Introduction to the Digital Transition, and the Getty Introduction to Art Image Access and the Introduction to Imaging. We need ten special sponsors to contribute $250.00 or more toward this special goal. We invite all interested vendors, corporate colleagues, and contributors to visit the Summer Institute website http://www.vraweb.org/seiweb/index.html for a fuller description of all aspects of our program and our roster of instructors. Please feel free to contact the 2006 SEI Co-Chairs for further information.
