Hi all-

I just was asked by my supervisor to come up with a dollar amount by
tomorrow for a yearly budget for the acquisition of library materials.
So far I haven't had a budget for that. The only way in which materials
got added to the library collection was through ordering materials for
curators and staff in the Education Department that they needed for
exhibition development, programs etc. on their budgets. The library also
received book donations and sometimes staff ordered and donated books
that they thought the library should have.

I could of course add up the dollar amounts of all of last year's
purchase orders (the budget would cover all book orders done in the
museum), and add some of the cost of the stack of printouts with titles
that I saved in case money would become available, but I was wondering
whether there would be an amount that would be reasonable considering
the size of the library (5000 book titles, 350 videos, DVDs, etc., only
10 periodical subscriptions), considering the operating budget of the
museum ($4,700,000.00 for 2004), and considering the percentage of
growth desirable for a library like ours.

It would be nice to be able to buy materials in the museum's subject
areas as they become available, add some more periodical subscriptions,
and beef up the reference collection. Then again, as a solo librarian I
also have to have the time to catalog them. We presently have access to
databases such as Art Index through a partnership with a local
university.

Any advice is appreciated,

Kitty
