Dear ARLIS:

It is my pleasure to announce the publication of a new ARLIS/NA Occasional Paper. Core Competencies and Core Curricula for the Art Library and Visual Resources Professions is number 15 in the Occasional Paper Series and promises to be an excellent and vital addition to both the series and to the literature of library research. This title is an invaluable tool that guides art librarians and visual resource professionals through the issues and challenges of creating competency standards and allied curricula. Full details about this excellent publication and how to order it are included in the press release that follows:

NEW! Core Competencies and Core Curricula for the Art Library and Visual Resources Professions

The latest in the ARLIS/NA Occasional Paper series (No. 15) introduces a new perspective to the competency literature. Core Competencies and Core Curricula for the Art Library and Visual Resources Professions includes competency guidelines, bibliographies, curriculum outlines and course materials, as well as papers on management and competencies related to the visual resources profession. This publication helps define the competencies that assist art librarians and visual resources curators in leading successful careers. If you are considering a career in art information, this book can help you better understand what skills and types of knowledge are generally acquired as an art librarian or visual resources curator.  If you develop curricula for courses in humanities reference, art librarianship, museum librarianship, or digital libraries, the course materials included can help you develop new outlines or revise old ones.  Core Competencies and Core Curricula for the Art Library and Visual Resources Professions includes approved competency standards, helpful information for any library organization beginning to create competency standards, and examples how individuals and organizations may put competency standards to use.

Part one includes the ARLIS/NA core competency guidelines for art information professionals that was approved by the ARLIS/NA Executive Board in June of 2005.  This section also contains an annotated bibliography on competency standards as well as papers based on presentations given at the 2004 ARLIS/NA conference in New York.  Topics include competencies for visual resources management and the use of competency models in library management.

Part two will be of particular interest to faculty and administrators of library and information science programs who are responsible for any curricula focusing on arts and humanities librarianship, museum librarianship, or digital libraries.  This section is comprised entirely of curriculum materials and course descriptions representing five exemplary graduate courses taught in library and information science programs in the United States, specifically covering art and design librarianship, museum librarianship, and visual resources management.   (2006) 140 pages.  Spiral bound.  $40.00. ISBN  0-942740-21-1

Authors:  Heather Ball, Bella Karr Gerlich, Tula Giannini, Paul Glassman, B. J. Irvine, Amy Lucker, Joan Stahl, Mary Wassermann
