LIBRARY DIRECTOR, BILKENT UNIVERSITY, ANKARA - TURKEY

Position Description:
The Library Director reports directly to the Rector of the University.  
The Bilkent University Library consists of the main library and a branch 
library on the East Campus.  The Library is also responsible for the 
technical services of two primary and two secondary school libraries on 
the Bilkent campus.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include overseeing staff, 
especially with regard to the preparation of in-house training and 
professional development programs and annual staff evaluations; 
supervising collection development policy, budget preparation and the 
decision process; supervising preparation of public relation materials 
including management of the library web site.  Serving on university 
committees when invited by the rector.   
Job Status:                     Full time 40-hour work week with 30 days 
annual leave after one year
Salary:                            Negotiable, depending on experience.

Preferred Qualifications:
International library experience highly desirable.  Five years of 
increasing management responsibility including staff management in an 
academic library.  Experience in budgeting.  Strong interpersonal 
skills, including the ability to foster a collegial work environment 
that encourages change and innovation; and the ability to interact 
effectively and work collaboratively and productively with a variety of 
individuals and groups in a complex and rapidly changing environment.  
Ability to communicate clearly and knowledgeably, orally and in writing.
The Working Environment:
Bilkent University is a private non-profit English-language institution 
founded in 1984 in Ankara, the capital city of Turkey, with the purpose 
of creating a center of academic excellence.    The University has some 
11,000 students in undergraduate and graduate programs in nine 
faculties, two schools of applied knowledge, a pre-enrollment English 
preparatory course, and two-year vocational programs in tourism and 
certain technical subjects.  In publications per faculty member in 2004, 
Bilkent University was first among the 77 Turkish universities. Bilkent 
was the first private university to be established after a change in the 
Turkish Constitution in 1982 and the first university in Turkey to 
develop an online library system, now used in thirteen university and 
nine special libraries.  With a collection of some 375,000 volumes and 
online access to more than 30,000 journals, the Bilkent University 
Library is a designated library for the receipt of U.S. Government 
documents, and a depository for the European Union and the World Bank.  
Special collections include the Halil Inalcik Ottoman History 
collection, the music and sound recordings collection, and the Turkish 
Plastic Arts Archive.  The Bilkent Library provides service to the 
Bilkent community, Turkish academia and to the public, daily from 8:30 
a.m. until 11:30 p.m., 362 days a year.  The Bilkent University Library 
is a founding and active member of the Anatolian University Libraries
