COORDINATOR, DIGITAL INITIATIVES
INFORMATION RESOURCES
UNIVERSITY OF CALGARY
Information Resources invites applications for the position of
Coordinator, Digital Initiatives to coordinate and manage major digital
projects, including the institutional repository using DSpace, and a
variety of digital collections using CONTENTdm. This is a full-time,
tenure track academic position, with an expected start date of May 1,
2006.
This position will foster and expand Information Resources’ commitment
to the digitization and inclusion of primary resources in support of
blended learning and the creation of a university-wide repository to
highlight research and scholarly output. Initially, the digital
collections will focus on images (for example, photographs, art, maps,
and aerial photos), both purchased and developed from our own
collections, and facilitate the use of these images in the classroom
and for research. The institutional repository will provide the
infrastructure for the work of research groups, individual faculty
publications, and student research, and also provide the means of
archiving data and other files acquired through national granting
agencies.
Responsibilities
Reporting to the Assistant Director, Information Technology Services
(ITS), guided by policy set by the Information Resources Council,
working closely with the Manager, Digital Object Repository Technology
and other ITS staff, you will be responsible for the development,
design, and support of projects using the DSpace and CONTENTdm
softwares.
You will develop an Information Resources (IR) user advisory group and
promote a culture dedicated to sharing expertise in support of common
tools for digital projects. You will learn and document features of the
CONTENTdm and DSpace software for the various IR projects, work with
staff to migrate existing collections, develop common procedures, train
users in the use of the application, and establish and manage a single
IR web site linking to all digital projects. You will test and evaluate
all modules and recommend how this software can support existing
projects and participate actively in the technical support for both
systems. Working closely with technical support personnel and database
owners, you will develop specifications for loading of databases,
metadata templates and standards, and coordinate the integration of
each collection into the overall site. You will also assist in
developing and writing internal workflows, policies, and procedures,
monitor professional trends in assigned areas, and make recommendations
for the development of the Information Resources digitization program.
As this is an academic staff position, participation and involvement in
