The 1999 VRA-ARLIS/NA Professional Status Survey gathered such
information. See http://www.vraweb.org/publications/proffstatus.html
for the data. It's five years old now but the general trends are
probably still valid. Most VR curators are administrative, not
faculty or faculty/librarian.
