The Museum With No Frontiers (MWNF), a European Union project to provide
online images and documentation of antiquities, art objects and
architecture, has just launched its "Discover Islamic Art" project at

http://www.discoverislamicart.org/

This provides images, which can be enlarged and "explored" using
mouse and cursor, of over 1200 items, including illustrated and
illuminated manuscripts. Extensive catalogue details and documentation
are provided for each piece. They are supplied by museums in Algeria,
Egypt, Germany, Italy, Jordan, Morocco, Palestine, Portugal, Spain,
Sweden, Syria, Tunisia, Turkey and UK. Among them is at least one library
(Uppsala University). Some of the items have been little known or studied
previously.

As well as searching by location, the database also allows the user to
enter keywords for finding objects by genre or other descriptive elements.

This seems to be a very useful resource, which provides a model of
what can be achieved by European and Euro-Muslim cooperation. Perhaps
there should also be a virtual library of Islamic and Middle Eastern MSS
and rare books (as objects, not just texts).
