In recent years, there have been two extraordinary exhibitions in the
West devoted to fine Chinese antiquarian books, both based on the
collections of China's National Library in Beijing, and both in rather
extraordinary locations given the centrality of the material culture
which they celebrate. An exhibition in Queens Public Library, New
York, was published in the unprecedented catalogue, 'Visible Traces'.
'The Ten Bamboo Studio' is the catalogue of a second exhibition held
at the National Szechenyi Library, Budapest. There is some overlap in
the material presented, but there are many entries and illustrations
here of items not included in the New York show - early editions of
illustrated drama and vernacular literature are particularly well
served. This, along with new introductory texts and catalogue entries
- entirely paralleled in slightly eccentric English - makes this
another essential reference for any Western collector or student of
the book in China.

Wang Shixiang: BEIJING GE SHAO. Beijing Pigeon Whistles. Shenyang,
2000. 112 pp. 23 pp. colour plates, numerous b/w text illustrations
and drawings. 23x19 cm. Cloth.
GBP 35.00

A delightful book on this appealing folk craft and once popular
Beijing pastime that involves the carving of pigeon whistles, usually
from bamboo or gourds, affixing these light whistles to the tail
feathers of pigeons and then flying the birds, upon which the whistles
produce a distinctive and harmonious sonorous noise. The whistles can
be quite complex, often with multiple whistles carved from one piece
of bamboo or gourd. Wang Shixiang has raised pigeons all his life and
practised the use of pigeon whistles, thus being well-acquainted with
all aspects of this pastime. This is the only detailed work on the
subject, containing the history of the pastime, the production of
whistles, their use and connoisseurship. Further benefits from a dual
English and Chinese text. Out-of-print. Recommended.
