Dear CW:

I am currently helping an English professor working on a book in which there is discussion of the two versions of Pieter Breughel the Elder’s “Tower of Babel”:  The 1563 “Large” version which is currently in Vienna and the 1563 (later?) “Small” version that is in Rotterdam.  He is looking for some art historians’ analyses of the symbolism and iconography of the two paintings.  Some sources have seen the “Large” tower as more optimistic than the “Small” tower painting (which is much darker).  He would also like some sources that discuss the colors, the presence of King Nimrod in the lower left-hand corner of the 1563 “Large” version (what does it mean), and he is also interested in a cloud formation that looks like a funnel or “tornado” in the upper left-hand side of “Large” painting as well.

Any sources he might consult or books/articles with commentary on the paintings would be appreciated.  Thank you very much for your assistance.
