Dear Traci:

Grandma Moses is but one of many "self-taught" artists who, with no prior experience, begin, in their later years, often after retirement, to make art or embellish their home environment so that it becomes a work of art in and of itself.  Next to Moses, Howard Finster is probably the most famous and just about as well known is Simon Rodia, who built the Watts Towers.  Grandma Prisbrey was another one.  Self-taught art is exhibited in the The Visionary Art Museum in Baltimore as well as in the American Folk Art Museum in New York.  Of course not all self-taught artists begin to make art so late in life, but many do.

Subject: [ARLIS-L] late-blooming artists

Dear Collective Wisdom,

I have a patron who is looking for sources that list “well-known artists who started doing their art after the age of 40.” Grandma Moses would be an example. I’m stumped. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Traci
