To reinforce Wolfgang's no doubt correct interpretation of the mustache as a stray part of a duster, I'd like to mention the depiction of the bibliophile among the woodcuts relating to Brant's _Ship of Fools_ (1494). He also carries a duster as his attribute.

 Sorry : correction , Arcimboldo again. Re: my message of 07/24. The painting I have referred to is of course the Stockholm version and  not a non-existing  "Oslo version" or, to be absolutely correct, it is the painting from Skoklosters Slott, Balesta, Sweden,  which is near Stockholm.
