Dear Miguel: The ARLIS/NA poster in the photo was commissioned for the 13th annual ARLIS/NA conference held in Los Angeles in 1985. The artist was Joe Fay and depicts coyotes dancing in the middle of downtown L.A. (which they do occasionally). The graphic designers were Daniel Stearns and Carm Goode. The coordination of the designing and commissioning of the art for the poster (as well as its distribution and many other related tasks) was done by Carl Baker, who was on our conference committee. It was entered in an international library poster competition sponsored by I.F.L.A. and won an "award of merit." The competition was judged by three Chicago graphic designers and there were two brief exhibitions of the award-winning entries--one in Champaign-Urbana at the U. of Illinois and one at the Palmer House Hotel in Chicago during the IFLA meeting, which was held there in August 1985. The poster was popular but, unfortunately, it was so expensive to produce that it was not a success as a fundraiser, even though it was capitalized by an anonymous "angel" and supported enthusiastically by both the Southern California chapter and the ARLIS/NA Board, especially Mary Ashe, who was National Chair at the time. I'm sure I'm not the only ARLIS member who still has the (now somewhat faded) poster hanging in their office or their home. It's nice to hear that you think it has withstood the test of time aesthetically.
