I had heard of this happening for sites like Google but didn't realize amazon.com was also a participant. The article provides background on the program but it doesn't answer Jonathan's question about what is the incentive for a commericial entity such as amazon.com (whose goal is to sell books) to inform users that a book could be had for free at their nearest library? Its a particularly interesting situation for artists book whose sometimes one of a kind nature makes them only available in libraries. There would be no record of it anywhere except the catalog record created at Wellesley and then perhaps uploaded to OCLC. One clue is that the titles are in lower case, as in a catalog record, and unlike most book listings on Amazon. Why would Amazon want to clog up it's system with books that will never be for sale? Has this topic been discussed anywhere?
