The Annual Conference of the American Library Association will be held later this month in Chicago. The MARC Advisory Committee and the Machine Readable Bibliographic Information Committee (MARBI) will be meeting twice, on June 25 and June 26; the agenda is available at http://www.loc.gov/marc/marbi/an2005_age.html Two papers scheduled for discussion seem particularly relevant to art catalogers. As described in Sherman Clarke's posting on VRA-L, these are: Proposal 2005-4R would establish a new field 662 for hierarchical access to topical subject headings for geographic entities. This version of the paper clarifies some issues from the last round at Midwinter. That is, the hierarchical levels are clearer and there is provision for indicating a thesaurus when appropriate. The levels will be in sync with those used in 752 for hierarchical geographic access to place of production. Proposal 2005-6 discusses terms and codes that can be used to distinguish subject access terms for depictions as contrasted with topical access. That is, it's a picture of a lion, not a book about lions. This builds on an earlier discussion paper which also addressed emblematic depictions and more complicated cases of topical and pictorial representations. As ARLIS representative to MARBI, I would be interested in any comments you have on any of the papers on the agenda. Also note that there is a session on Cataloging Cultural Objects on Saturday, June 25; three of the four presenters are members of ARLIS/NA (is this a record?).
