A committee has been formed with the goal of implementing a memorial to those
art historians from the University of Vienna who were forced to immigrate,
were persecuted, or murdered during the 1930's and 40's because of their race,
religion or beliefs. We anticipate that it will be located in the garden
courtyard of the University of Vienna outside the current Department of Art
History.
A list of art historians who were forced to immigrate, or who were persecuted
or murdered will be part of the memorial. We have identified the names of
about 50 persons. Many are well known and prominent, such as Ernst Gombrich,
Otto Paecht, Otto Benesch, Ludwig Muenz, Otto Demus and Leo Planiscig, but
others are not as well known and we may have missed some. There are no
comprehensive lists known to us (we have used the book by Ulrike Wendland,
Biographisches Handbuch deutschsprachiger Kunsthistoriker im Exil; Leben und
Werk der unter dem Nationsalsozialismus verfolgten und vertriebenen
Wissenschaftler,
Munich 1999, but it is incomplete.)
Therefore, if you know of an art historian who immigrated from Vienna in the
1930's or1940's please let us know.
