TECHNICAL SERVICES LIBRARIAN, Lewis Walpole Library Rank: Librarian II/IV The Lewis Walpole Library, a department of the Yale University Library, is an internationally recognized research collection in the field of British eighteenth-century studies. Its unrivalled collection of Walpoliana includes half the traceable volumes from Horace Walpole's famous library at Strawberry Hill and many letters and other manuscripts by him. The Library's book and manuscript collections, numbering over 32,000 volumes, cover all aspects of eighteenth-century British culture. The Library is also home to the largest and finest collection of eighteenth-century British graphic art outside the British Museum; its 35,000 satirical prints, portraits, and topographical views are an incomparable resource for visual material on every aspect of English eighteenth-century life. Located in Farmington, Connecticut, forty miles north of New Haven and within easy distance of Boston and New York, the Lewis Walpole Library's collections also include drawings, paintings, and furniture, all housed on a 14-acre campus with four historically important structures and extensive grounds. The Library runs an active fellowship program and sponsors conferences, lectures, and exhibitions in cooperation with other Yale libraries and departments. Because of the recent expansion of programs and increased numbers of staff, the Library is embarking on a major renovation that will provide state-of-the-art collection storage, a spacious reading room, and new staff workspace. RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the general direction of the Lewis Walpole Librarian, the Technical Services Librarian is responsible for all aspects of the acquisitions and cataloging operations of the Library. The Technical Services Librarian's primary responsibility is original and complex copy cataloging for the Library's wide range of materials (including books, ephemera, prints, drawings, digital images, manuscripts, and other media) and the establishment of authority records. A significant component of the position is the continuation of an ambitious project to create high-quality catalog records in MARC format for the Library's collection of eighteenth-century British caricatures and political satires, a project that is linked to an equally ambitious initiative to digitize the Library's graphic materials. The Technical Services Librarian supervises one professional staff member, who is responsible for the day-to-day acquisitions function and who assists in cataloging, and may train and revise the work of students, library assistants, and other professionals. In collaboration with other professional Library staff, the Technical Services Librarian develops policies and procedures for the technical services operations of the Lewis Walpole Library. The Technical Services Librarian performs descriptive cataloging in accordance with national standards and the requirements of Yale's local Endeavor-based system, working closely with the other catalogers in the Yale Library system; keeps abreast of revisions in cataloging rules and trends and applies new rules, interpretations, and techniques as appropriate; follows Library of Congress standards and local practice for subject analysis and classification and NACO standards for authority records. The Technical Services Librarian may work in collaboration with the librarians and staff of other Yale libraries and departments, including the Beinecke Rare Book and Manuscript Library and the Yale Center for British Art. In cooperation with Lewis Walpole Library colleagues, the Technical Services Librarian participates in providing public services, including reference and reader services; contributes actively to the Library's management, assessment, training, and development programs; and works to implement the mission of the Library. It is expected that the Technical Services Librarian will be active professionally. QUALIFICATIONS: MLS from an ALA-accredited library science program.
