Could someone please explain why "Britannia" is a "(Symbolic character)" yet "Marianne" is a "(French emblem)"? They and the other emblematic and/or symbolic characters of Uncle Sam, John Bull and Mother Ireland all have the broader term of "[Country name]--Symbolic representation." Isn't "Snake devices" a rather odd heading? Although "Devices (Heraldry)" is a well-established subject heading, specific heraldic devices seem to be given headings like "Lions in heraldry" or "Eagles in heraldry." I see from LC's catalog that the "He-Man figures" are the action figures from the Masters of the Universe series. However, if this book includes all of the figures, such as Skeletor, not just the He-Man/Prince Adam ones, then wouldn't "Masters of Universe figures" be a better heading (along the lines of "Star Wars figures")? To some library patrons, the term "He-man figures" might suggest representations of gender stereotypes. Is there some reason LC chose to call such dolls "figures" rather than "action figures," when they do use the heading "Action figures (Toys)"? The word "figures" can refer to many types of depiction, not just the toy form. Also, a puzzling heading from many months ago was "Alien films." Does this cover only the movies featuring the beast that terrorized Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), or can it refer to any motion pictures about extraterrestrial creatures? Please reply to the list, as others might want to know about these. Many thanks! --K.A.
