LISTSERV 16.5 - ARLIS-L Archives
Last week, after four intense, informative, and
delightful days at the Artists' Book Conference in Los Angeles, I came home to
find the Spring issue of Art Doc had finally arrived. The first
two articles are on the topic of artists' books! There was much talk at
the conference about this being a banner year for artists' books because of
there being bi-coastal 4-day artists' books conferences happening less than
a month apart (the other one is happening at Wellesley June 15-18). The
Los Angeles conference attracted an overflow crowd including many from outside
of California and even from the East Coast! To then find in Art
Doc Louise Kulp's very thorough review of the literature of artists' books
in libraries (including her insightful thoughts concerning what she calls the
"definition debate"), together with Joyce Ludmer's narrative of the Getty
Research Library's development of its artists' books collection and an
overview of her exhibition at the Getty Research Institute, the opening of which
("The Artist Turns to the Book") served as the climax of the L.A. conference
last Tuesday afternoon, was icing on a very big cake! This issue of
Art Doc includes several other excellent articles--and don't miss the
wonderful interview by Tom Jacoby and Eileen Markson with Bill Dane, one of
ARLIS/NA's founding members. Just one complaint: how long must we
endure the color brown on the cover? This is the fifth issue (and the
start of the third volume) that is brown. Whatever happened to the
practice of using a different color to distinguish each volume? Just
wondering.
