Published in collaboration with the University of Milan, the volume
presents the recently discovered excavation journal of the celebrated
Egyptologist Victor Loret, who made some of the most important
discoveries in Egypt in the nineteenth century. The manuscripts provide
an extraordinary account of Loret's work in the Valley of the Kings in
1883 and 1898-99, where he discovered the tombs of Tuthmosis III,
Amenhotep II, prince Maiherperi and others, and worked on other royal
tombs already known at the time.
In the tomb of Amenhotep II, Loret found the mummy of Tuthmosis IV,
Amenhotep III, Merenptah,
Sethi II, Siptah, Ramses IV, V, and VI, and probably also queens Tiye
and Tausret, deposited there around 1000 B.C. The find, later to be
called the second royal cachette, was until now known only through an
article published by Loret, and much scholarly doubt was expressed
concerning the existence of his excavation journals.
Detailed examination of material in the Archives of Egyptology of the
University of Milan, which include almost the whole of Loret's archives,
and of his other notebooks now at the Académie des Inscriptions et
Belles-Lettres in Paris, has revealed the steps leading to the discovery
of the second royal cachette. In this way, it has been possible to
reconstruct the exact positions of the objects found in the tombs, and
bring to life the controversy that surrounded the transportation of the
mummies to Cairo in 1898.
The original texts have been transcribed and annotated, the maps
reproduced and updated, and the original positions of the objects
indicated. The volume is lavishly illustrated with color reproductions
of the manuscripts, Loret's watercolors, maps, ancient and modern
photographs of the tombs, and objects. The diaries, letters, excavation
journals and notes for lectures of this eminent Egyptologist eloquently
tell the story of the most important discoveries in the Valley of the
Kings until Howard Carter arrived in the twentieth century to unearth
the tomb of Tutankhamen.
