Several librarians have inquired
about what, besides the
checklist, will be included in the
catalog of my collection,
American
Decorated Publishers' Bindings, 1872-1929.
This is NOT intended as a bibliographic
reference work,
though some may use it that way.
It is an artist's book
about a personal collection that
only includes bindings
that particularly caught my eye
for one reason or another.
It is a study collection, and the
catalog texts are notions
that came to me while rearranging
the books on my shelves.
I am a bookbinder, and the purpose
of studying these cover
designs is to create a binding inspired
by the collection. That
will become the cover of the Deluxe
edition of this catalog.
I have placed a few draft pages online for ARLIS-L subscribers:

about the bindings that followed
Will Bradley's design for
In Russet and Silver (1894).
Note that this is a working draft.
Comments, corrections and suggestions
are encouraged.
The limited edition catalog and CD-ROM
are on schedule for
2006 publication. Pre-publication
discount subscriptions are

Subscribers to any of the forthcoming

to the draft website, where all
the texts are placed as I
write them, and the complete checklist
of about 350 books.
About half of them now have photos
online, and the imaging
should be done in about three months.
