ARLIS colleagues -
Below is a press release that went live today. Some may have seen an
earlier announcement posted to the VRA list when questions about AMICO
prompted us to release a preview of RLG's plans for making the content
available going forward. Please let me know if you have questions, and as
more information becomes available you'll hear from us again!

Mountain View, CA, 26 May 2005 - RLG is pleased to announce CAMIOTM,
Catalog of Art Museum Images Online, a database of art from prominent
museums. CAMIO's contents span all continents and range from 3000 BC to the
21st century. They include high-resolution images of photographs,
paintings, sculpture, decorative and utilitarian objects, prints, drawings
and watercolors, jewelry and costumes, textiles, books, installations, and
architecture - plus audio-video and mixed media.

CAMIO fills the gap left by the end of operations of the Art Museum Image
Consortium (AMICO). RLG was actively involved with the consortium, offering
the AMICO Library database for subscription from 1998 to 2005. Many
educational institutions came to depend on the AMICO Library as a source of
high-quality, rights-cleared, fine art images. Now, RLG has negotiated
individual arrangements with many of the AMICO member museums to continue
offering access to their content through CAMIO. This new database not only
supports art history, studio art, and design departments, it also provides
rich context for history, religion, and other humanities programs.

"We're glad that we can deliver this valuable arts resource to the academic
community," says Ricky Erway, manager of digital resources at RLG. "The
AMICO Library has been very popular, and we're committed to continuing
support for the use of art images in education and research."

Museums contributing to CAMIO also benefit from this new arrangement. There
is no fee to participate and their museum staff receive free access to
CAMIO. In addition, RLG offers museums the opportunity to make their images
available for licensing through Trove.netTM, an open-Web image database,
and receive revenue.

"CAMIO is evidence of RLG's commitment to the library, museum, and archive
communities - and to the provision of quality resources for teaching,
research, and learning," says Susan Roeper, librarian, Sterling and
Francine Clark Art Institute.

CAMIO is scheduled for release for July 1, 2005. It is available by
subscription to universities and colleges, public libraries, museums, and
schools. The database is used through the same powerful Web interface that
users previously enjoyed with the AMICO Library from RLG. Institutional
representatives are invited to register for a free trial of CAMIO at:
