Hello, Forum Members

I am chairing two different session areas for the
Mid-Atlantic Popular / American Culture Association
Annual Conference, to be held in New Brunswick, NJ,
November 4-6, 2005. Please consider participation.
The first area listed here has been holding lively
panels for several years. The second area is newly
added this year.

Sincerely,

David Duckworth

Lesbian/Gay/Bi/Transsexual Studies: All thoughtful
proposals on the representations of lesbian, gay,
bisexual, transgender, transsexual, and transvestite
folk in popular culture are welcome. Some topics such
abstracts might explore are: self-discovery, life
phases, cross-group alliances, and family in LGBT
narratives; political rhetoric as it presents LGBT
people; resistance to or subversion of social
convention; and depictions of those with multiple
"minority" status, where LGBT identity may intersect
with that of a racial, cultural, or religious group
that is not "mainstream," or LGBT identity intersects
with an aspect of disability; and discussion of such
issues in any medium of popular culture, such as TV,
movies, Internet, billboards, novels, nonfiction
literature, music, or political speeches.

Popular Culture and Activism: papers or presentations
are welcomed on the life of activism in popular
culture production. Whether historical or
contemporary, investigations into the role of activism
in shaping popular culture or the role of popular
culture in shaping activism are encouraged.
Individuals or groups, working from within any
ideological framework, which have utilized popular
media or sought to effect popular media may serve as a
guiding framework. Inquiries into the ability of
popular media to contain activist priorities and or
its conductivity of ideological agendas are also
relevant.

To submit a proposal, please send a 150-word abstract
(include AV needs; please note MAPACA supplies
carousel projectors/screens and VCR/monitor) and a
brief CV or bio by June 15, 2005. Panels of 3 or 4
presenters, single papers, roundtables, or alternative
formats are encouraged. Sliding scale registration
fees apply.

Please note: you may submit more than one proposal,
but you may only present ONE paper at the conference.
