I've just received word that Gere McGilvery died of
cancer at her home in La Jolla on March 11. Librarians and other book
people knew Gere as the friendly voice on the phone when calling about the rare
and out-of-print book and magazine business she ran with her husband Laurence
McGilvery, who has been a member of ARLIS/NA since its earliest days. They
worked closely with libraries and individuals to build general and specialized
art collections. According to a featured obituary written by Jack
Williams in the San Diego Union Tribune (Sunday, March 27, 2005),
in 1962 Geraldine McGilvery was put on trial in San Diego Municipal Court for
selling "a used, 50-cent paperback copy [of Henry Miller's Tropic of
Cancer] to an undercover police cadet." According to Larry, "The
proceedings were sometimes dramatic, sometimes hilarious and never boring ...
her wit and graceful demeanor on the witness stand were instrumental in helping
the jury uphold the First Amendment." According to the Tribune
article, "Mrs. McGilvery took an active role in organizations that reflected her
political and environmental views, including Planned Parenthood and the Sierra
Club. She also organized book fairs for the San Diego Booksellers
Association." "Gere knew all the authors; she was a walking resource,"
said Chuck Valverde, owner of Wahrenbrock's Book House in downtown San
Diego. "If you came in with questions, she had the answers--or she knew
how to get them. Gere was the backbone of the San Diego Booksellers.
She did the big, administrative work for this organization until four or five
months ago."
A celebration of her life is scheduled from 4 to 7
p.m. April 24 at The Athenaeum in La Jolla. Donations are suggested to The
Athenaeum, the La Jolla Public Library, The American Civil Liberties Union, or
Emily's List.
