Greetings to all.
I also had a similar query from a professor. The instructor would like
to use images from the Scrovegni Chapel by Giotto in her publication.
So, if I understand correctly, if she uses the images from a book dating
1915 she will not need to request copyright permission? What about if
the book where the images are is after 1915? Will she need to request
permission of usage to the publisher of the book or the Chapel?
Thank you for explain this confusing topic.
Best,

Ruth,

An image published in 1915 is in the public domain. Your
faculty may do ANYTHING he wants with it. ANYTHING.

Put it in publication. Sell it on T-shirts. Paint it on his
house. Make a .jpg for free downloading on his website. Sell postcards
of it for $10 a pop.

        See http://www.unc.edu/~unclng/public-d.htm

IN 1915 American Architect had an image of a hospital in one of its
issues, and a faculty member would like to reproduce it in a current
scholarly publication.

American Architect was absorbed by Architectural Record, and I am
waiting to hear from them, but haven't heard from them yet. Any
other thoughts?
