The staff of the John M. Flaxman Library at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago announce a memorial fund in honor of our recently deceased colleague, Fred Hillbruner.  Fred was a remarkably intelligent, creative, and gentle person who held the position of Technical Services Librarian at the School's John M. Flaxman Library for twenty-six years.  He passed away on November 15, 2004.

Fred was in charge of library systems, cataloging, acquisitions, and good cheer.  Patience, professionalism, and a droll sense of humor were his trademarks.  He mentored many new librarians, and helped to guide many students into library- or book-arts-related skills.  Fred also pioneered the cataloging of artists' books, and was recognized internationally for this area of specialty in librarianship.  Early in his career here, at a time when many libraries failed to treat artists' books as unique materials, Fred worked with faculty and staff at the School to found an artists' book collection that has now grown to international prominence.  In addition, he designed both the software and the descriptive vocabulary used to catalog the School's renowned Joan Flasch Artists' Book Collection.  Fred was a friend and colleague to Joan Flasch, with whom he shared many interests.  He was also an artist, and is represented in the Flasch Collection by his 1986 work, What is Wrong With This Book?  -- a three-dimensional, stamped object that illustrates Fred's characteristic irony.

Contributions to the Fred Hillbruner Memorial Book Fund will be used to purchase more of the type of works that delighted both Fred Hillbruner and Joan Flasch.  The books and book objects acquired will be added to the Joan Flasch Artists' Book Collection and identified as Hillbruner Fund purchases.  They will provide ongoing pleasure and instruction for students, scholars, and other visitors from the local community and beyond.

Those who wish to contribute can make checks out to The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and mail them to:
