Evolving Operations: Libraries, VR Collections, & Digital Image Resources
As libraries become more invested in the licensing of aggregated image databases, the roles of librarians and visual resources curators are blurring, requiring heighten collaboration and cooperation to manage them effectively. Areas of responsibility are also blurring, including collection development, reference, technical support, and instructional services. As image databases licensed by libraries are developed, we need to analyze the licensing processes, functionality requirements, service implications, and interoperability with other local content management and presentation systems. Fortunately, libraries and visual resource collections have a common mission: to bring together collections and users in a manner that supports teaching and research. This session will discuss various aspects of how libraries and image collections work together to choose image databases, to identify needed functionality, to train faculty and students in effective database use, and to explore how these databases fit into the “big picture” of image management on a campus.
