Greetings,

I am writing with exciting news about ARTstor's availability in Canada.

As of today, Canadian institutions are invited to participate in the
ARTstor Charter Collection. Participation fees are now available and
ARTstor access will begin July 1, 2005.

ARTstor (www.artstor.org) was established by The Andrew W. Mellon
Foundation with a mission to use digital technology to enhance
scholarship, teaching and learning in the arts and associated fields. As
part of a community-wide effort to further this goal, ARTstor continues
to build, develop and make available new content in a digital library of
images and related information for researchers, teachers, curators, and
students. The ARTstor Digital Library is a repository of hundreds of
thousands of digital images and related data, the tools to actively use
those images and a restricted usage environment that seeks to balance
the rights of content providers with the needs and interests of content
users.

The ARTstor Charter Collection currently contains approximately 300,000
images. By the end of 2006 it is expected to contain 500,000. The
Charter Collection documents artistic traditions across many periods and
cultures and embraces architecture, painting, sculpture, photography,
decorative arts, and design as well as many other forms of visual
culture. The Charter Collection is expanding daily. To view more
information about ARTstor's collections please visit,

Institutions pay two fees to participate in the ARTstor Digital Library
- an Archive Capital Fee (ACF) and an Annual Access Fee (AAF). The ACF
will help to ensure that ARTstor can sustain its long-term preservation
role, as well as respond appropriately as new technologies and standards
emerge. The AAF helps cover part of the annual costs of providing,
supporting, and enhancing the software and services provided by ARTstor.
Among other functions, these ongoing efforts include improving image and
data quality, supporting users and participating institutions, and
adapting and improving the software. You can view the Canadian ARTstor
Charter Collection participation fees on the ARTstor site at,

If you are interested in receiving further information concerning
ARTstor participation, please contact me or my colleague Javanica Curry
at [log in to unmask] or (212) 358-6400 or complete the on-line
participation form accessible at
http://www.artstor.org/info/participation_info/participation.jsp.

Since ARTstor's launch in July 2005, over 350 U.S. Institutions have
begun participation. We could not be more encouraged by the
enthusiastic response of the U.S. library community, and we are excited
to initiate our international outreach efforts in Canada.

With best regards,

Barbara
