This is to bring notice to the publication Degenerates and Perverts: The 1939 Herald Exhibition of French and British Contemporary Art co-authored by Eileen Chanin (Macquarie Galleries, Sydney) and Steven Miller (Archivist at the Art Gallery of New South Wales).

Details of the publication are online at the website of Melbourne University Publishing:
http://www.mup.unimelb.edu.au/catalogue/hotoffthepress.html

The first review of the book appeared in The Australian,
Australia's national daily newspaper (Friday 4 March, Smee,S. "Herald of the Modern World", p.19).  This is available online at
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,12434106%255E16947,00.html

The 1939 Herald exhibition has often been compared with the Armory show, which brought modernism to New York in 1913, or
Roger Fry's post-impressionist exhibition in London in 1910.
Chanin and Miller document the exhibition accurately for the
first time.  This includes provenance details of the works
exhibited, many of which now belong to museums in the
United States.  They locate the exhibition within the
context of developing modernism during the inter-war
period.  This includes accounts of interactions between
Australian and American artists, writers, critics and
collectors.   The book particularly mentions the importance of
Mary Cecil Allen's publications, advocacy and teaching at Columbia
University. She organised the 1931 Roerich Museum exhibition of Australian art, the first exhibition of Australian art held in the United States.

Due to the dispersal of much of the archival material covering this activity, being alerted to the availability of this publication may
be of interest.
