Houston Galleries Houston has a long tradition of support for the visual arts. Commercial galleries, not to mention the institutions and collectors that patronize them, are a vital part of this environment. Some noteworthy selections by region are as follows: Midtown (accessible via the light rail on the way to the Museum District) Inman Gallery / 3901 Main St. / www.inmangallery.com Recently reestablished in their expanded midtown space, they show a range of emerging and established artists, many of whom are from Houston, including Amy Blakemore, David Aylsworth, and Bill Davenport. Notable artists from outside the region include Todd Hido and Dario Robleto. Always worth a visit, especially in their new digs. Museum District (accessible via the light rail, though will require some walking) Barbara Davis Gallery / 4411 Montrose Blvd. / www.barbaradavisgallery.com Housed in a Houston's newest gallery complex, this gallery represents a range of local and nationally recognized contemporary artists such as Joe Mancuso, Sharon Kopriva, and James Surls. West and Southwest of downtown (accessible via automobile) Devin Borden Hiram Butler Gallery / 4520 Blossom Street / www.artdealers.org/cgi-bin/members.cgi?galleryId=borden&location=houston .html Now in their twentieth year, they show the work of local contemporary talent including Joseph Havel and Matthew Sontheimer, as well as international figures like Jennifer Bartlett, James Turrell, and Robert Wilson in a unique setting that includes a garden and gallery in a neighborhood setting. [Note: Society Circle Reception will be held here.] John Cleary Gallery / 2635 Colquitt {Gallery Row} / www.johnclearygallery.com One of the few galleries in town that focuses solely on photography, they represent Modern masters Edward Weston, Manuel Alvarez Bravo, and Eudora Welty, as well as contemporary practitioners Michael Kenna, Larry Clark, and Dan Burkholder. Meredith Long & Co. / 2323 San Felipe / www.meredithlonggallery.com A local institution for over forty years, this gallery provides a full spectrum of American art from the late 19th to the 20th century. Recognized 19th century masters such as Mary Cassatt and Childe Hassam grace the walls along with the likes of Helen Frankenthaler, Kenneth Noland, and Frank Stella. Mixture Contemporary / 1709 Westheimer / www.mixturegallery.com A relatively new addition to the Houston gallery scene, Mixture has made a strong mark by regularly installing challenging shows by emerging and mid-career artists from Texas and beyond. Recent highlights include the work of Eve Sussman, Scott Calhoun, Danny Yahav-Brown, and Mark Flood. Moody Gallery / 2815 Colquitt {Gallery Row} / moodygallery.com Having weathered the Houston art scene for over three decades, Moody Gallery has a strong reputation for handling high quality regional artists, such as Luis Jimenez, Jim Love, MANUAL, and Michael Kennaugh. Sicardi Gallery / 2246 Richmond Avenue / www.sicardi.com In Houston for over a decade, Sicardi represents the work of Modern and contemporary Latin American artists. They continue to expose Houston audiences to art and artists from this region that are often underappreciated. Some examples are Modern masters Joaquin Torres-Garcia, Gego, and Gonzalo Fonseca, as well as contemporary photographers Luis Gonzalez Palma and Mario Cravo Neto. Texas Gallery / 2012 Peden / www.texgal.com In contrast to its name, this gallery features contemporary artists from New York and Los Angeles, as well as Texas. At it since the early 70s, they have cultivated a well-deserved reputation featuring the likes of Ed Ruscha, H.C. Westermann, Jeff Elrod, and Rachel Hecker.
