How best can digital images from licensed resources find their way into the
classroom? The RLG Advisory Group on Instructional Technology investigated
this issue through review of current practice in the community and
interviews with faculty who teach with digital images. While the findings
of the Advisory Group are applicable to any image database supporting
teaching and learning, RLG is taking to heart the recommendations as we
plan enhancements to our Cultural Materials service. RLG Cultural Materials
(http://www.rlg.org/en/page.php?Page_ID=630) provides access to photos,
digitized manuscripts, art, historical documents, and memorabilia from
around the world to support teaching and learning.
The findings of the working group validate RLG's strategy of focusing on
discovery in the image resource itself, while enabling easy import of the
images into the management and presentation tools that the campus or
individual faculty member prefers to use. Beyond a simple way to work with
single images, the group also advised on more advanced mechanisms for
downloading large sets of images, as well as access from outside the
resource (e.g., meta-searching or interoperating with other systems, such
as Luna Insight and ARTstor). RLG will pursue all these possibilities in
making our image resources as useful as possible.
