IT'S TIME TO PLAN NOW FOR A TRIP OF A LIFETIME! JOIN GSLIS THIS SUMMER FOR A ONE OF A KIND TOUR OF MOSCOW AND ST. PETERSBURG. Soviet Secrets, Russian Revelations: An Inside View of Information and Access in the New Russia July 15 - 26, 2005 The University of Illinois Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) and the Rudomino All-Russia State Library for Foreign Literature invite you to join us on a unique historical and educational exploration of Moscow and St. Petersburg this summer. As a participant in this small group (maximum 25) study tour, you will visit different kinds of libraries, archives, museums, and other cultural institutions to see how Russians are dealing with the challenges of providing access to information and preservation of cultural treasures 14 years after the end of the Soviet era. You will meet librarians, educators, legislators, and people in other relevant professions who will share with you their concerns and strategies for working in settings where, a short time ago, information was controlled completely by the state, and cultural institutions played a very different role in society. The tour will be led by Marianna Tax Choldin, founding director of the University of Illinois Mortenson Center for International Library Programs and distinguished scholar of censorship and freedom of information in Russia, the Soviet Union and the post-Communist world. Her contributions as a scholar who has studied these issues in Russia for many years "from the outside" will be enhanced by those of Russian colleagues who will speak about the issues "from the inside." Suggested Audience: Everyone is welcome. This tour will be of particular interest to individuals concerned with information access issues and the preservation of cultural heritage institutions in Russia today.
