On the one hand, shelving by size is efficient space utilization and bindings will be properly supported, especially if you shelve very tall or heavy books flat. On the other hand, separate shelving sequences frustrate browsers and they may never know about oversize collections.

Use patterns, physical characteristics of collections, access (closed vs. open stacks), would all have to be considered.

Since our users so often rely on browsing and serendipity, we prefer to integrate sizes as much as possible.

Facilities Standards for Art Libraries, Planning Academic and Research Library Buildings , the National Archives and Records Administration (http://palimpsest.stanford.edu/byorg/nara/volume.html
and the Northeast Document Conservation Center (http://www.nedcc.org/p101cs/candh.htm) are good places for start for book shelving standards.

Subject: shelving books by size?

Jan. 18, 2005

Dear list,
We are looking for input on practices of shelving books by size.
=20
We have Stacks (less than 12 in. tall) and Quartos (roughly 12-15 in. =
tall)
-- shelved separately on opposite sides of the library (I use inches =
rather
than centimeters to describe this to the students).=20
=20
Anticipating the opportunity to install all new shelving, we are =
wondering
whether some libraries integrate these sizes, and what advantages they =
find
in that arrangement.
=20
I've worked in libraries where the Quartos are housed on shelves at the =
end
of each row, but we have so many Quartos that this would probably not =
work
for us. I've also seen the different sizes on separate floors of a =
smaller
library. I understand that the shelving space is more efficiently used =
with
separate shelving by size, and it makes sense - it also seems healthier =
for
the books.
=20
Any thoughts?
