I have recently been hired to create a small visual resource library at Studio in a School in Manhattan.  The collection would be available to teaching artists who would check out reference materials and bring them to their classrooms as visual aids.  We’re thinking of collecting books, posters, object and other reproductions.

Does anyone have any suggestions of possible ways to organize the materials both on the shelves and in a database?  I have spoken to one librarian who swears by Dewey, another, Library of Congress.  I’m also wondering if there are other ways of organizing things that might be more conducive to browsing or that might be more suited to teachers who will be using materials to illustrate project ideas.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Suzanne Kammin
