TITLE:  Coordinator of Web Development

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTION:

The Hofstra University Libraries' Web site provides access to resources, services, collections, and news of the university's libraries and is the primary service and information delivery point.  The Web environment's further purpose is to create an integrated and coherent electronic portal, responsive to the information and access needs of university patrons.  As the creative designer and coordinator of the libraries' Web presence, the Coordinator's primary function is to take leadership in building a site that effectively presents to users the wide array of digital and print collection resources available through the libraries and beyond, guides them in their research endeavors, and engages them through dynamic and interactive design.  In addition, the libraries' electronic presence serves as a communications mechanism, as a gateway to resources and services, and as an informational resource about the libraries' staff, services, units and facilities.  It is intended to be a virtual extension and symbol of the libraries, to be easily navigable, and to provide a sense of identity and coherence to the user.  The Coordinator of Web Development will play a key role in the development and maintenance of a continually evolving Web presence, paying particular attention to its possibilities for information literacy instruction. 

 

The Coordinator of Web Development reports to the Assistant Dean for Reference Services and Collection Development and fulfills the responsibilities enumerated below in concert with the Senior Assistant Dean of Library Systems and Technology, the Computer Center Technical Coordinator, the Computer Operations Facilitator, and the Internet Technology section of the Computer Center.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Coordinate the libraries' World Wide Web site, with specific responsibility for the content and design of the home page and other upper-level pages

* Develop on-line instructional and assessment materials, supporting distance education and on-site instruction programs

* Create, assess, and implement on-line, self-guided tutorials

* Enable new capabilities, such as virtual reference services

* Establish an ongoing usability testing and assessment program

* Monitor content for accuracy, currency, and consistency

* Monitor, identify, and communicate innovations in applications of the Web for the delivery of resources, services, and information

* Assist library faculty with the design and content of useful Web pages and subject guides

* Develop on-line interactive tools, such as surveys and forms

* Contribute to the development and maintenance of the Web-based public access library catalog

* Learn the Spectra Web page publishing tool

* Run link checkers

* Maintain database vendor administrative modules

* Maintain stylistic and structural consistency throughout Web pages

* Recommend Web policy development

* Convene a Web advisory group for guidance in the development of philosophy and policies related to the libraries' Web environment and to insure consensus and ongoing communication with technical services

* Complete additional assignments as needed

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

* An ALA-accredited Master's degree in library or information science

* Demonstrated ability to develop an effective Web site with a degree of complexity

* Knowledge of Web design principles, including familiarity with Web accessibility and usability norms and guidelines

* Strong writing and editing skills

* Demonstrated skills in project management, consensus building and problem solving

* Solid understanding of the role and potential of technology for the design and delivery of information resources and services

* Demonstrated experience with HTML and JavaScript

* Facility with tools used in building and assessing Web resources and services, such as design, statistics, data collection

* Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and between departments

* Experience in an academic or research library environment desirable

 

COMPENSATION:

* Minimum $45,000

* Includes a full benefits package
