Printed Matter is extremely pleased to announce our second offering of historic material from the Franklin Furnace archive, the Complete Set of Printed Stuff. Following up on this past summer¹s presentation of The Flue, Printed Matter is proud to make an even more extensive collection of publications from this fellow pioneering alternative arts organization available to librarians and collectors worldwide.
Franklin Furnace was founded in 1976 by artist Martha Wilson to champion ephemeral forms neglected by mainstream arts institutions. The organization developed a place in art history for artists¹ books, temporary installation art and performance art, and introduced the public to work in these media through such exhibitions as Cubist Prints/Cubist Books, The Avant-Garde Book: 1900-1945, Fluxus: A Conceptual Country, as well as thematic shows such as Artists¹ Books: Japan, Multiples by Latin American Artists, Contemporary Russian Samizdat, and Eastern European Artists¹ Books. Taken together, Franklin Furnace¹s magazines and catalogues document a history not available under one coverŠ
Until Now! Franklin Furnace and Printed Matter are collaborating to bring out the Complete Set of Printed Stuff produced by Franklin Furnace during the years 1976 to 1999. The Complete Set comes in three archival boxes: one containing publications produced from 1976 to 1988 (10 1/2 x 15 x 5 inches); one containing publications produced from 1990 to 1999 (also 10 1/2 x 15 x 5 inches) and one containing the Complete Set of The Flue, published from 1980 to 1989 (101/2 x 15 x 21/2 inches). All three boxes are emblazoned with rubber stamps produced by performance artists in Franklin Furnace¹s 1988-89 and 1989-90 seasons.
The first publications released by Franklin Furnace were printed on 4 x 6" note cards. The Franklin Furnace Archive Artists' Books Bibliography is a three-volume set of cards cataloging books in the Franklin Furnace collection, which grew to become the largest collection of artists¹ books in the United States published internationally after 1960. The collection was acquired by the Museum of Modern Art in New York in 1993. The next significant publication, appearing in 1980, was a tabloid containing a flexidisc, the first volume of the multi-format magazine, The Flue. The variety of formats employed in Franklin Furnace¹s early publications demonstrate the organization¹s flexible and creative response to the documentation demands of non-institutionalized art forms. By 1999, Franklin Furnace¹s publications reflected challenging new forms of expression now known as "variable media art" with the booklet The History of the Future.
