Dear Colleagues:
Flipping through the latest issue of Dwell
(Jan/Feb 2005, p. 104-109), a beautiful bi-monthly of modernist
domestic architecture, I was startled to see the name of someone very familiar
to ARLIS members: Milan Hughston! In an issue with the theme "Small
Is the New Big," Milan's New York apartment is featured in six (count
'em--six) full-color pages, with Milan himself in half of the full-page
photos. According to the article, his beautiful, creatively
designed studio apartment in the West Village was "reconfigured
... two years ago, with help from architect Joel Sanders" and was inspired
by "photos of Lincoln Kirstein's apartment." And I've just noticed that he
is quoted on the spine (!) of the magazine: "This might sound odd, but I've
always fantasized about living in one room." The article ends with another
Hughston quote: "You don't need a lot of space, because the whole city is your
space." And, yes, his profession and current position (Chief of
Library and Museum Archives at MoMA) are mentioned. Milan--we're proud to
know ya!
