George Catlin’s Mysterious Publications

In conjunction with the exhibition, Stamped with a National Character: Nineteenth-Century American Color-Plate Books, the Amon Carter Museum will host a scholarly symposium entitled George Catlin’s Mysterious Publications.  A distinguished panel of three noted scholars will address many of the unanswered questions related to the fascinating world of this artist-explorer, whose works are some of the most enduring images in the literature of nineteenth-century Americana.

Stamped with a National Character: Nineteenth-Century American Color-Plate Books
January 29–May 8, 2005

 

Stamped with a National Character: Nineteenth-Century American Color-Plate Books features more than 120 items that trace the development of color illustration in nineteenth–century America, from its tentative beginnings when hand-colored engraving was most prevalent to the invention of photomechanical reproduction processes.

 

Stamped with a National Character: Nineteenth-Century American Color-Plate Books is organized by the Amon Carter Museum in association with William S. Reese and is made possible in part by a grant from the Garvey Texas Foundation.
