In early February, I will leaving the Delaware Art Museum and starting a new position as Head of the Reference Collection at the Yale Center for British Art in New Haven. Consequently, the Delaware Art Museum is now searching for a new Head Librarian. The full position announcement follows.

The Delaware Art Museum is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Head Librarian, Helen Farr Sloan Library. The Helen Farr Sloan Library includes nearly 30,000 book titles and has unparalleled manuscript and special book collections. Focusing on American art of the 19th and 20th centuries as well as American illustration, the library also has extensive holdings of British Pre-Raphaelite materials. The Museum is in the final phase of a construction and renovation project that will entirely transform the Museum and library. The Delaware Art Museum has very strong 19th and 20th century American art collections and is known for its unique holdings of American illustrators including Howard Pyle and his students. The Museum and Library holdings corresponding to the artist John Sloan are one-of-a-kind, and the Museum's collection of British Pre-Raphaelite works of art is one the largest in the United States. The Head Librarian position is full-time and reports to the Chief Curator. Salary is dependent on qualifications.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

 

Position: Head Librarian, Delaware Art Museum

 

PRIMARY OBJECTIVES: 

 

To serve as the Museum's primary liaison between researchers and others who seek information from the library resources.  Provide materials and information to the library's users in an efficient and organized manner.  Promotes access to the library collections to a wide variety of users while acquiring, maintaining, and conserving materials for the library and archives.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: 

 

Reference Services - 50%

  a.. Provide full reference services for the museum staff, docents, visiting scholars, students, and the general public, via telephone requests, written requests, e-mail or in person 
  b.. Conduct tours of the library and its facilities when feasible in cooperation with the Education Department 
  c.. Sponsor and conduct library and bibliographic instruction programs when feasible 
  d.. Process interlibrary loan requests
 Administrative - 35%

·        Supervise library staff, volunteers, and library interns

·        Establish library policies, procedures, and standards

·        Prepare and execute a library collection development policy, within the framework of the museum's goals and policies

·        Establish and maintain an automated library system with access through the Internet

·        Increase library and archival holdings by seeking donations of significant materials

·        Prepare and administer the library portion of the Curatorial budget

·        Seek funding and/or grants for significant capital purchases

·        Develop library exhibits and support material for museum exhibits

·        Keep record of all gifts, exchanges and purchases

·        Maintain Library Exchange Program information

·        Publish in-house material such as library brochures and finding aids as deemed necessary

·        Provide news from the library for the member's calendars

·        Promote the library as a significant part of the museum to the Wilmington community as well as to the academic/museum community

·        Establish a good relationship with similar institutions in the area

·        Conduct tours of, and orientations to the library for staff, docents, and museum visitors as requested

·        Arrange library activities, such as book signings, literary/artists discussions, when the opportunity presents itself

·        Keep up-to-date on new library technology

·        Make sure all equipment is in good condition and properly serviced

·        Provide opportunities to enhance professional growth for staff

 

Library Technical Services - 15%

·        Purchase, catalog, and prepare materials for use.

·        Organize and catalog archival materials

 

SPECIALIZED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS: 

·        Masters degree in library/information science, with subject knowledge of art history.

·        Demonstrate excellence in verbal and written communication skills

·        Demonstrate ability to deal effectively with a variety of people

·        Demonstrate ability to prepare long and short range plans

·        Demonstrate ability to do detail work

·        Demonstrate ability to plan and carry out a project in a logical manner

·        Demonstrate ability to represent the library and museum in a positive manner
