Dear Katherine,

Shelving by size only gives you more room if you shelve the most
common size as precise as possible. You mention that you have so
many quartos, and that will be the case for most ibraries. e at the
Stedelijk Museum found that books ranging from 22 to 28 cm are the
most common, and we apply rather precise format shelving for these
categories, like 22, 24, 26 and 28 cm shelves.
For a retroporject in which we recatalogued 25.000 books, we won
back lots of space. From 5 shelves to 7 or 8 shelves per stack.
