Hello, I am trying to trace the origin of a popular image that often appears in cartoon form. The image is that of the caveman dragging a cavewoman by the hair to his cave. I am uncertain how to trace the beginning and development of this image. I believe that the figures in the image are portrayed as cavepeople because the early notable discoveries of ancient human remains were often in caves. I am also under the impression that the notion of a man wearing an animal hide and carrying a club may have classical antecedents because the hero Heracles (Hercules) was often portrayed that way. The caveman in hide and with club motif is very common; the most recent compilation of cartoons from New Yorker magazine has instances going back to the 1930s. The motif also shows up in strip cartoons such as Alley Oop and BC. However, these popular and 20th century sources are all from the United States. It is possible that this image is older that them, and that it is not American in origin. Can anyone offer suggestions as to how to trace this motif back to its beginning?
