Hi, Miguel et al. I think they can be very cost effective in these tight times. I have purchased several and the production values are generally pretty good. Since they are often titles that might not be picked up by the mainstream, I think we should support them. To be realistic, many books that are "traditionally published" could be considered as a form of "print on demand"; often the first run of a title is a short one and only when orders accumulate do the publishers/printers run the next batch. POD titles can be hard to find. Occasionally I'll run across one while searching Amazon or other sites of that ilk or through Baker and Taylor. And, yes, I think we should review them. Then we'll know the good from the bad. If enough of us purchase "good" titles, perhaps a major (or even minor) publisher will pick up the title and publish it more traditionally. My two cents. What are we as an organization (ARLIS/NA) doing to promote books produced via POD? Will Jane's book be reviewed in Arts Doc? Do people have a mechanism to receive, review and ultimately purchase POD books? I'd like to hear what other art librarians are doing about POD books.
