FAMOUS LIBRARIANS

Scott Rummler's paintings of famous librarians are on display at the Kips Bay library at 3rd Avenue and 31st Street in New York City until the end of the week. The paintings are brightly colored semi-realistic cartoons based on digital images of famous librarians such as J Edgar Hoover, Chairman Mao, and first lady Laura Bush. Rummler is also a librarian and Web designer.

The images, which include one of the artist, question the traditional identity of the artist and the role of highbrow cultural venues. The images show the difference between digital and analog information and how they are transformed into art, and hint that libraries have traditionally made use of more advanced and effective information concepts than is sometimes understood.
