Dear Listserv Subscriber:

Advocates for open access to archival information will be excited to learn about Cold North Wind and the Paper of Record(tm) database.

As the Product Manager for the Paper of Record(tm) at Cold North Wind I would like to invite further discussion of this feature, and encourage your thoughts and comments concerning the direction of digitizing archives. For those of you in the library and archival fields who aren't familiar with the Paper of Record(tm) initiative, the following information will be of extreme interest.

Paper of Record(tm) is a newspaper database that provides state of the art searchable full-page images of historical newspapers that are viewed via the Internet. Derived from microfilm, newspaper pages are expertly digitized using Optical Character Recognition (OCR) process. As a result, this sophisticated technology generates authentic historical newspaper pages that provide unprecedented researching ease. To date, various local and national newspapers are available from a number of countries. Publications such as the Toronto Star, Globe and Mail, The Melbourne Herald and The Sporting News are just a few that make up the sprawling database.

Currently, Canadian institutions offer access to Paper of Record(tm) through a co-operative agreement with the Ontario Library Association. The publication of these historical newspapers fulfill a significant demand for public access and provide vast circulation of Canada's historical and cultural heritage. As a recent History M.A. graduate I have found access to services such as Paper of Record(tm) an invaluable tool for primary document research.

If you know of any historical data within your institution or local historical society please consider the value of the Paper of Record(tm) and its benefit to your community and/or educational institution.

For a demo to Paper of Record(tm) please send an email to me, Sarah Campbell at [log in to unmask] I will be more then happy to generate passwords to anyone wishing to gain access to this brilliant database feature. Both small and large institutions are encouraged to check this out. Additionally, if you've noticed that your local library isn't on board with Paper of Record(tm) and you would like this to happen, please visit www.paperofrecord.com for more information or forward this message to all interested parties.

Thanks for continuing to build public access to information throughout Canadian institutions.
